Project Information

My first attempt at hand carving. I made this Welsh Love Spoon for my wife as an anniversary gift a couple of years ago. I used my scroll saw to cut the pattern out of a piece of 1/2" material. I then carved it down to about 1/4" diameter on the handle and scraped/carved out the spoon portion. The shadow box I designed for it has interlocking ends, and a dado cut on all four sides for the back panel to fit into. Theoretically, an impossible design, I found out when I tried to put it together. However, since I had come this far, I removed one of the interlocking pieces (ok, so I broke it trying to make it work), and was able to assemble the box. I then glued on the piece that I had "removed". I did get the look that I wanted though, and that was that the box did not have any fasteners holding it together. The front glass slides in and out through the top in a dado slot that I cut for it. I lined the back with crimson velvet cloth, carved out the hook and spoon rest, and glued them in place. All and all, I was moderately happy with it as a first try, and my wife loved it.

Thanks Topamax, Bearpie, and Sawtooth. I forgot to mention in the description the first time, but this took me about 8-10 hours to cut and carve. The box took me a couple of hours. I also tried my hand at relief carving on a clock that I will post later. Take a look at it and tell me what you think.
