Project Information

I made this rack out of leftover maple and walnut from a previous project as well as some leftover 1/2" square rod. I put the bottom of the rack about 2 or 3 inches up from the bottom so that i can vacuum under the wood or remove an water from melting ice. The finish is just a natural minwax stain and I used wax for the first time. I think I will be removing the wax and using a polyurethane in the summer. I liked how easy the wax was to use but didn't like the protection. The bottom of the rack is a maple box I made with mitred corners and pine underneath to reinforce. I didn't like how my mitred corners turned out so since the rest of the project was an experiment I used a torch to burn all the corners to give a rustic look. It's something I've always wanted to try but I usually care too much about a project to have the guts to take a torch to it. Overall, it was a very simple project and didn't take much time and once I get it filled it holds enough wood to keep us warm and dry for a long time.

Nice design and well thought out. I'm thinking of incorporating metal in a furniture project or two but not sure how to manage the metal construction and sources for it as well. Looks like some welding was involved?

Nicely executed! I like the sleek look of the metal frame and the top displays nicely. Sure beats my 2×4 structure in the basement, but not one sees that but my husband and I while stoking the wood stove. :)

yep, I picked up the steel for pretty cheap from a local welding shop and I used a wire welder for the welding.
