Project Information

In response to the number of folks who commented on my original post http://lumberjocks.com/projects/53211, I have put together the plans for this project. I have made every effort to make sure that the plans are correct, but if any errors are found, please notify me so that I can make the appropriate corrections.

If anyone builds the project, please post your photos. I am interested in seeing what improvements and simplifications you make to my design. After all, nobody ever builds something according to the plans, but puts their own little "tweak" to it to make it better….......... :) Bring 'em on folks!!

The posted plans contain drawings, photos, and build notes, and are presented in a .pdf format, which can be viewed or printed.

The downloadable file for the"Flip-Top Cabinet" project plans can be found here: http://www.box.net/shared/xdnhfs8v7stjhqduo464

February 9, 2012-A new .pdf file has been uploaded to the above site and incorporates corrections to the Materials List and the height dimension of the Caster Well Divider. Both of these are minor corrections and may warrant copying of only the two pages containing the chnges.

Thanks for taking the time to draw up the plans for this terrific looking flip-cart.
It sure is a unique creation.
Well done, thanks again.

OUTSTANDING! Not sure when I will be able to get to this project but it is high on my list. Right after the wife's projects. Your effort and willingness to share is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks…will have to add this to the "list"....as I gather more equipment, this will move to the top of the list…I have both units on mobile stands by themselves now…thanks again for putting the time and effort into helping us out.

Thanks Paul, I have downloaded the plans but am not sure just when I'll start on building it. I am still looking for a sander. Your generosity is awesome!

Thank you Paul! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into the plan - I would have gladly taken a scan of chickenscratch but this went above and beyond!

Thank you all for your kind comments. I'm glad that I was able to give something back to the LJ community for a change. I visit this site every day and I really enjoy the wide array of wonderful projects presented here, along with the positive, encouraging comments. It is also gratifying that so far 75 people have downloaded the plans from the remote server. I hope to see some of their "improved" versions showing up here and on other forums.

Paul, your generosity and great plans & pics have moved me a few steps closer to getting at a project that's been on my list for quite a while. I especially like the heavy-duty aspect of your version. Thanks!

Thanks, TNwoodchuck! The cabinet is probably a little heavier duty than it needs to be, but when you are suspending and rotating a couple of 100 lb. machines 3 ft. off the floor, heavier is better IMHO! If you build this project, please post some pics so we can all see how you made it better!

I just ran across this YouTube video a few minutes ago:

I don't know why I didn't see this one when I was looking around for ideas-and it looks like he built it about 2 years ago! Oh well, "Great minds think in the same direction" they say!!

It looks like this guy used hinged blocks as stops at all four corners to control the rotation position. If you used spring-loaded hinges, like the ones used for holding cabinet doors closed, that might be a modification to my design that would be worth looking at. C'mon guys 'n' gals, put on your thinking caps…............. :)

A couple of LJers who have made or are making their versions of this project have discovered a couple of minor errors to the posted plans. I have made the corrections and uploaded a revised .pdf file. Because the corrections are minor any of you who have downloaded the previous file may want to copy only the revised Materials List and the Caster Well Divider drawing.

I downloaded the entire revision, so as to only have ONE file to reference.

Thanks for staying on top of this.

In this hectic, crazy world, it would be easy to put this at a low priority level. But that is what makes LJ's such a GREAT site, people such as yourself.

Again, thanks for the all your effort. with both the original & revision!

Thanks, Randy

I hope you are going to build one of these flip top cabinets or something similar one of these days. They are sure a space saver. I hope someone comes out with one that has the planer turned 90º with some sort of outfeed support built in. That would be a great improvement to my original design.

Thanks for your encouraging comments.

I like the 90º idea with outfeed support. Sounds like the gauntlet has been thrown!

Great, now you've got me thinking. That could prove dangerous!!!

Actually, I'm in the process of setting up & organizing my shop. Jigs, Fixtures, Storage & MOBILE CARTS are what I need to do. That is, as soon as I finish building my ambient air cleaner.

Once my air cleaner is done, I have a "real" project to complete. Then it is onto more shop efficiency/ergonomic upgrades. Perhaps my version of your "Flip Top Cart" will end up at the top of the priority list. As the saying goes; Only time, will tell.

I have converted Paul's plans to sketch up if anyone is interested. Search for "Stoops flip top"

Stoli,
Did you convert the original version #1 or the revised version #2?

BTW: Thanks for doing that!

I based it on the revised version. However, I think I found some other small issues (which I have told Paul about), and there are also some small differences because I used 3/4 material, not Paul's assumed 0.71" thick plywood since I am planning to use MDF. I did use his preferred dado depth of 7/32". I also did not include some of the smaller hardware like the washers and bearing, and the inside of the table is much simpler.

BTW, Paul on has the original version (with some updated comments), and revision 1. There is no revision 2 yet.

You are correct, my apologies.

In effect, they are based on rev 2, since the corrections Paul is talking about were uncovered when I was making this sketch up model.

You're welcome. I hope they work for you. Be sure to post some pics of your build- and maybe some design improvements. Of the 650+ downloads of those plans, I have only seen one post in which the person used the plans to build his version!
