Project Information

First off I would like to thank mikeacg, Tony 1212 & Loren for answering my questions about which guitar strings to use, I really appreciate it. A few months back my MIL asked if, sometime, I could make her a Finnish door harp…she is very proud of her Finnish heritage. I had never heard of one- so I went searching on the internet and found whatever information I could…This project is what I came up with. It is approximately 6 1/2" wide and a little over12" tall.

This door harp was made from a piece of figured maple and finished with shellac/transtint dye like the Wood Whisperer did for his pencil box project. The inlay is a butterfly edge glued piece of figured walnut scrap I had kept for years.

My knot tying skills are awful & I have never done anything with guitar strings before. I actually had to re-do one of them. I watched multiple YouTube videos and they made it look way too simple.

I was able to get it finished before December 26th-when we exchanged gifts with the FIL & MIL. She was very appreciative. I included a tuning wrench…my FIL has played guitar for over 60 years and he can tune it a lot better than I ever will.

I showed the picture to a co-worker and he asked if I could make one for his aunt…..I couldn't say no.

Thanks for looking.

Bill,

Congrats on finishing in time! It turned out fantastic!!! (I'm still finishing up a few of my last minute projects…)
We have quite a few Finlanders up here in the UP if you are looking for a ready-market to sell these…

That turned out great!

And thank you for the thank you. :D It's also good that your dad plays guitar so no one has to endure the cacophony that I had to while growing up.

i think it makes a pleasant sound….but it has been in the hands of my FIL for a few months and he probably has it tuned better than I was able to.
