Project Information

this is a birdhouse that I made for my dad for Christmas. It is made of cypress, it has a brass rustic keyhole plate with a little skeleton key for the perch so the bird can enter the birdhouse. I used some 3M spray glue to glue the dried moss onto the roof.

The keyhole i cut out with a jeweler's saw (something from my metalsmithing days). It's not only decorative but it prevents squirrels, and other larger animals from enlarging the nesting hole and getting in an eating the eggs, ect. Inside the birdhouse i glued little steps so the baby birds can get out of the nest when they are ready

I sealed it with Thompson's Water Seal plus, which i really like so far. One coat, dry for 48 hours and you're done. I attached the moss after the Thompson's Water Seal coat. Hopefully they'll get along and the moss will stay on. Any other ideas to keep the moss to stay are welcomed, but it seems to work fine (but who knows after the first rain this birdhouse is exposed to if the moss will stick. i hope it does)

My parents usually get version 1.0 of my projects to test and see if the design works before i make version 2.0 for selling :)

Hey Tag,
Haha actually this is the only one I have made. I might do more later.

My dad put it up during the spring (I gave him the birdhouse Christmas 2010) and he says birds nested in it this past spring. So it works :D
