Project Information

Hi everyone,

This is a balancing sculpture I call, Fescue. Each of the three wooden blades is a carefully balanced pendulum, and each blade hangs from the next largest blade. If you give it a push, it spins and tumbles with a seemingly random and chaotic motion. It takes about 30 seconds to reach equilibrium and return to its starting orientation. Fescue also has the option of an alternative appearance by simply moving one of the blade's weights (see the images above).

You can see Fescue in action here:

Plans for Fescue are available on my website: http://www.derekhugger.com

All the best,
Derek

beautiful. simple and organic. I like your use of contrasting wood and the size graduation of each pendulum with respect to the next. Looks like a ratio of golden means…is it? Obtaining balance in a system of compound pendulums like this is a bit of a feat. It must have take a lot of time to balance this properly. I build clocks, some large, some small and some have compound pendulums. They are often hardest to get going but the reward is phenomenal. Nice work, keep it coming.
