Project Information

Since my wife and I recently bought our very first house we needed some furniture but were a little tight on the budget. Since our new house has a two and a half car garage I can finally have at least a small woodshop and figured he I'll see what I can build. Since this is my first actual inside furniture piece and money was tight I went with construction grade pine and while it took a little more time to get things square I love woodworking so it was fun from the beginning. Anyway this is based on the plans available from http://www.ana-white.com and since I didn't thing to take pictures while I was working on it I only have three towards the end. It's pretty basic stained golden oak with a wax finish on the top but all in all I think it turned out pretty good and I learned a lot. Not to mention it was a good excuse to convince the wife to let me buy some new tools including a 12" sliding compound miter saw and a random orbital sander amongst some other things. Let me know what you think I'm pretty easy and am more than happy to receive constructive criticism.

I did one from the same plan I think. Yours looks way better than mine though. This was my first piece of furniture. It's nice when the wife wants something and it means new tools. Especially when they don't know that you don't REALLY need that tool for her project.

I learned a lot by doing 2×4 furniture - nothing wrong with it. When you hit doing period furniture or whatever you aspire to - I bet you'll keep this first project - just because it felt see good accomplishing the build.

Good for you!

The first piece for your new home will most likely become a permanat fixture wherever you live.

Thanks everyone and yours looks great Mickeyg I must admit though mine has a slight wobble but the matching coffee table I just finished turned out miles better because of what I learned from this one… not to mention my dad gave me a 12.5" thickness planer 4.5" joiner a table saw and a bunch of other stuff that I didn't have before.

I have learned through replacing the carpet with hardwood floors in my home that the floors in my house are anything short of dead flat. And I don't think that there is a straight wall or square corner either. I put t-nuts and plastic feet in my table legs, set it on the floor and extend the feet until the table is level and doesn't rock. When I first started putting the flooring down I thought it was something that I was doing wrong but I happened to see a little daylight shine underneath a straight edge and started checking the rest of the floor. There are some dips here and there, nothing that makes me concerned about the structural integrity of the house(other than it is built out of sticks and probably finished in about a week), but certainly enough to make a chair or table wobble a little.
