Project Information

In 1981 I built a family room onto my house. I put in a wood stove to heat the room. At the time I really enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood. However the older I got the less fun it was to cut, split and haul wood every weekend, so about 4 years ago I took out the stove and ran heat out into the room. The corner that held the stove just sat empty until a few months ago when I decided to redo the whole family room. A few things I wanted to do was to make all the window, door and chair rail molding and to rebuild the window seat with raised panels. For the corner that the wood stove sat I decided to make a fake raised panel fireplace. Here are the results.

Wow, really great work! Fitting things into angled spaces can be pretty difficult, especially against brick. This really looks nice.

I hear ya re: the wood hauling!

Love the new fireplace. Very rich looking.

I saw on TV once that there is a "fake fireplace" insert thingy (can't remember what it looks like, maybe just a tub of liquid) that creates heat, makes a little flame and yet doesn't need venting.

I have one of those Debbie…It's called propane and being ventless, it's also 100% fuel efficient. I really like the fact that I don't have to handle firewood and I can turn it off when it's no longer nessessary.

But Mike, I went on to your Flickr postings…Did you do all those carvings and turnings? You've got some absolutely fabulous work there! I like to reccomend it to anyone else: http://www.flickr.com/photos/paturner

Beautiful workmanship. Don't know what that window looked like before - but it is really nice now. I like the raised panel look.

Great job!

I can't believe you got tired of "saving all that money" on heating bills. I almost put in a fireplace at one point in my life, because I thought it would save me money. But, then I began to count the cost of the pickup truck, chain saw, log splitter, trips to the ER, and decided I not to do it. Life is a learning experience.
