Project Information

I decided to make a plate for our house of our immediate family. The plate was made from Lime (basswood), the design and letters were chip carved finished with a polyurethane spray. The natural darkness of the bottom half of the plate has almost obscured some of the letters so I might try staining the letters to make them stand out more, I shall leave the plate a wee while to see if the plate will darken naturally first.

Very nice work. I can only wish I could chip carve that well. Practice and good gloves make perfect w/o bandaids.

This is a wonderful project to showcase important family events. Your carving skills are excellent and I greatly admire the talent you have.

Colin, your plate looks great! The staining you talked about doing should help the contrast and help hide the color difference, just make sure you wipe the surface off well. I hope you don't mind a little critiquing but I would have added a little design around the edge of the plate to help the lettering not looking like it is running off of the plate. You are well on your way to being a very good chip carver. Keep practice!
