Project Information

My wife has asked me why I get all those woodworking and tool catalogs when we don't have any money to buy the stuff in them. I smile knowingly and tell her that I get ideas for things that I can make to make things easier for me to make! This always makes her give me the look! You all know that look; It's the same look a calf gets when he sees a new fence. What!
Anmy way I got the latest Garret Wade tool catalog and saw those cool face frame clamps and decide to make a few for myself.
Unfortunatly I didn't take any pictures of the build process only the end result. The only thing I need to do to now is glue some rubber to the underside of the clamp pad so it doesn't slip.
I used recycled maple scraps that I use to make my "tools." Some 5/16" all thread, 5/16" nuts & T-nuts, 1/4" mild steel rod, 1/4" flat washers and cotter pins. I made the Knobs on my drill press and bent the 1/4" rod on my vise. After gluing the upright in the dado I drilled 2, 1/4" holes and doweled it with the steel rod. I epoxied the T-nuts in place, and for the sliding clamp I drilled and counter bored for a 5/16" nut that has a cotter pin to keep it from spinning off then I glued that assembly to the back of the sliding clamp block.
The dimensions are:
Base - 3/4"x1 1/2"x10"
upright - 3/4"x1 1/2"x3"
Slide - 3/4x"2"x3"
slide nut housing - 3/4"x1 1/4"x1 1/4"
Knob - 3/4"x2 1/4" dia. (oak flooring scrap)
5/16" all thread - 6" long
1/4" rod - 6" long, 2 bends @ 2" ea.
1/4" rod dowels - 1 7/16" long
cotter pins - 1/16"

Very clever.

The line, "I get ideas for things that I can make to make things easier for me to make." sounds just like something Yogi Berra would say.

Nice adaptation of the idea from Garrett Wade catalog. My approach is, my wife asks for me to make her something. I don't care what she wants me to make, there has to be at least 1 tool that I don't have, but I need in order to be able to make it. Sometimes I have to get a little creative in explaining why I need a particular tool. I think she is on to me after 9 years, but she lets me buy them anyway. She's a nice lady.

heh thats what I do with my mom.
"Oh I saw such-and-such-vastly-overpriced-item-with-a-brand-name-on-it in this catalog that I really like."
"Oh I could make that for you, if only I had Router Bit B"
"Oh really, well heres some money for it"

also cooooool clamps :)

Thanks for all the great comments guys. I think I'll try a little suave and subtil maneuvering like docholladay and Jei'son did only my wife is such a great gal if she knows I need it she would give her blessing. Letting me use our family room for my shop proves what a wonderful wife I have. She is the greatest! (and not just cause she might eventually read this!)
