Project Information

The latest version I have of an attempt to make the Penrose expanding trivet.

This one has a few features that will help to keep the assembly together (other versions I built had a tendency to come apart if they weren't on a flat surface).

I blogged a build here, which has more detail on the particulars of cutting and assembling these.

I've got about 15 more that need to be done for Christmas gifts.

As always, comments/suggestions are always welcome.

I've made quite a few of these and they are always good gifts. One suggestion to keep them from coming apart I've been gluing a small 1/4 inch dowel in the center part after they are assembled, just drill a hole before assembly and then glue the dowel in after they are put together. Hope it isn't too confusing, I would add a picture if I knew how but I could email you one if you want.

I'm making 3 of these as we speak. I like the dado'd track you added.

Thanks, Albert, but I came up with what I think is a good solution, no drilling needed.

Glad to hear, Eric. The dowel is an easy fix to an issue I was having with the assembled pieces wanting to fall apart if they weren't resting on a flat surface. Read the blog and you'll see that I use paste wax to lubricate the track for easy sliding of the pieces.

I saw that earlier, but I'm always impressed when someone actualy make it - requires some level of craftmanship.

Thanks, Ivan.

I've learned a thing or two, but still plenty more to learn. ;-)

So this morning, finished the final set; a total of 25 pieces. As with most things, the gluing and assembly got easier toward the end as I figured everything out. Now to remember to put all my lessons learned in my woodworking journal!

I hope everyone has a happy holiday, and see y'all in the new year.
