Our garage is my workshop. I'm supposed to be sharing it with our two cars but neither of them have seen the inside of the garage for a few weeks now. It has recently become clear to me that one of them never will make it back in there.

As a side note, when did a 2 car garage become a garage that has exactly enough room to fit one medium and one small car and still not have enough room to open doors on both sides of one of the cars. Seriously. I don't know how big a 2 car garage is traditionally, but ours is like 18' x 20'.

My garage is the same way. It is attached to the house and we park our durango in there. I can't imaging trying to get another car in there. We kinda just look at ours as a really big 1 car garage… :)

At this stage, with some rearranging I could probably shoe-horn in both cars but it would be a pain. Once I get one or more of: jointer, drill press, band saw it will be completely impossible so I'm giving up now. Makes my life much easier.

Mine's 24×24. Shoulda built it 8' deeper though. An attached shed is in the future. Tom, with a little thought you can incorporate a shop and garage together. Keep looking around this site as there's all kinds of help and ideas. And welcome to LumberJocks!

Tell your wife it isn't big enough to be a real garage so it will just have to be the shop until you can build a real garage.

mrtrim: That made me laugh out loud! Wouldn't work for us but I actually spent a minute daydream about what I could buy with the money.

Thos. Angle: Unfortunately, the lots where we live are just big enough so that you can fit a house if you build all the way out to the setbacks. I guess that is the price you pay for living on an island and having a water view out the back window.

Todd & Dadoo: I'd kill for 24×24. That extra 6 feet wide would allow room for a big built in work surface and some stationary tools along the wall. I'm still going to do that, there just won't be room for both cars. I've seen a ton of cool storage ideas and seen people who have done some very amazing things to make complete workshops share the garage with their cars but I decided I don't mind my car on the driveway and that will allow me to have things setup a bit more to my liking.

Thanks for all the input!

Tom, I know what you mean. My wife drives a GranAm and I a truck. The truck sits mostly on the driveway as it is actually smaller then the two car gagrage so if I don't pull off the side of it into the gras(well mud really) my wife would never be able to pull in or out of the garage. Don't know what builders were thiniking.

Hi Tom,

I am sorry that it took me so long to get around to looking at your shop post. How about posting some pictures of it. I find visual tours of other woodworking shops to be an enjoyable part of this site.

By the way in response to your question my upper garage is 20×20. When we built it in 1987 it was fine for two cars but now both of us drive full size trucks and needless to say my wife's truck barely fits in her side. There is about 3" of clearance on either side coming in and about 1' clearance in the front and rear when it is parked. It is a good thing that I put another garage in our walk out basement for my shop because I will guarantee you that if I asked her to put HER truck out in the weather in order to set up shop in the upper garage I would be out in the weather before her truck would.
