Project Information

My parents 50th anniversary was coming up so I decided to make them this entryway table to go in the house they're remodeling. My inspiration came from a couple of tables. One was a curved leg table in my home; the other was the end table Marc Spagnuolo made a few years back. I really like the combo of the walnut base with the curly/tiger maple top. I cut the legs out on the band saw (8/4 walnut milled to about 6/4), started the rounding on the router table (just to hog out some wood) then move on to hand rasps, then to files, and finally sandpaper and card scrapers to round over and blend the legs with the stretchers. I tried my hand at the floating top and think it turned out well. Used 3 screws per side (fixed centers and sloted exterior) to hold down the top (curly maple- 4/4 milled down to about 3/4). I finished it with General Finishes Arm-r-seal in semi gloss. I'd never used it before but really liked it. Pretty similar to homemade danish oils I've used, but the sheen seems a little closer to the wood (might just be in my mind) giving the wood a nice oil rubbed look- not too thick.
Anyways, the most important thing was they really liked it.

I love the "Maloof-esque" joints, the pictures show how dedicated you were to getting perfection.

Great work!

Spliter- I want to "attempt" a Maloof rocker one of these days. Man those things look good to me. I think this was a good warm up to it. Still some areas I need to practice some skills on before jumping on one though…
