i live 30 minutes south of albany. just curious as to where you get your lumber. i know that hankle lumber is out in your direction but i haven't dealt with them. i have been to valente's over in poestenkill and they have a nice inventory.

The pine for this project was picked up at the local lumber company. I hand select all my boards, looking for the best in the pile. I'm also a scrounger of sorts. Check out the pallet and scrap piles at the lumber yard. I found around two dozen of 2×6, 4' pieces of oak that were once a shipping crate for something heavy. Already turned out some nice garage stairs from those.

The maple I use, some was discovered in an old barn and given to us. It's 100 year old 1" thick flooring from the old Georgetown Sawmill. They used to make wood flooring there a zillion years ago. It's now gone but the pond and dam remain. Each board is like 4" wide and 12-14' long and full of 10p nails. Farmers back then used whatever they had on hand for construction hence the 10p nails. The pile was about 3' high and 3' wide. That's a lotta reclaimed maple for free. Nice treasure find there…I was very excited with that find!
Some other maple I have comes from a buddy who cuts and splits firewood for exercise and profit. A windstorm had dropped a 100 year old tree in his yard so he had it milled. It's hard as a rock and not too friendly with planer blades, but it is very pure in grain. I got a bunch of 5/4 by 6", 10 footers for around .50 cents a foot.

So what I'm saying here is to buddy-up with the lumberyard boys and check out your local mills for great, yet cheap wood. Don't forget to dry it too.
