Project Information

Believe it or not, it actually took six years to complete this project! Why, you ask? Because it took that long to convince my wife that we needed a Hi-Def TV for the living room!
So this project started out as a credenza (but secretly built big enough to accomodate a 50" TV!).
It's pine on birch plywood. I'm using local maple now for my new projects, but since I started with pine, I had to finish with pine.
She loves it and now has it decorated with plants and books and stuff. Truthfully though, I think the movies look the best!

Great looking entertainment center. Sure looks like a fish tank though. I assume that's a screen saver on the TV.

Very nice job. I like how you have the door that hide the speakers when closed. Great picture.

You are and inspiration to us all….extraordinary planning. I've been planting hints but so far no bite on the high def as yet. What finally convinced the boss?

It was "On Sale"!!!

Still though, she looks at it and asks, "Why do we need such a big TV?"
There are somethings she'll just never understand!
And thank you all for your compliments…my "inspiration" though, comes from people like yourselves. I'm looking forward to visiting and posting more to this site in the future.

I like the speaker cabinets and bookshelves at an angle. It adds to the the overall look.
I appreciate the comments about "negotiate the next project by" your spouse.
Maple is on my list for woods to work with too. After I negotiate the costs of maple by ….

The pine for this project was picked up at the local lumber company. I hand select all my boards, looking for the best in the pile. I'm also a scrounger of sorts. Check out the pallet and scrap piles at the lumber yard. I found around two dozen of 2×6, 4' pieces of oak that were once a shipping crate for something heavy. Already turned out some nice garage stairs from those.

The maple I use, some was discovered in an old barn and given to us. It's 100 year old 1" thick flooring from the old Georgetown Sawmill. They used to make wood flooring there a zillion years ago. It's now gone but the pond and dam remain. Each board is like 4" wide and 12-14' long and full of 10p nails. Farmers back then used whatever they had on hand for construction hence the 10p nails. The pile was about 3' high and 3' wide. That's a lotta reclaimed maple for free. Nice treasure find there…I was very excited with that find!
Some other maple I have comes from a buddy who cuts and splits firewood for exercise and profit. A windstorm had dropped a 100 year old tree in his yard so he had it milled. It's hard as a rock and not too friendly with planer blades, but it is very pure in grain. I got a bunch of 5/4 by 6", 10 footers for around .50 cents a foot.

So what I'm saying here is to buddy-up with the lumberyard boys and check out your local mills for great, yet cheap wood. Don't forget to dry it too. :)
