Project Information

This is an entertainment center I built for my oldest Son's birthday. He like dark colors, so I built it out of oak, and finished it with the rust stain, ant then a light coat of blue dye. The dye soaked into the grain where the rust didn't. I also built it with his needs in mind. He currently has his bed on the floor without a frame, so he didn't want his TV to high, but I know eventually he will want to put the frame back under his bed, and not want to watch TV through his feet. So, I built a set of drawers that can be place on the bottom shelf, of on the top, there is a set of pegs, that locates it and locks it in so it won't slide. The drawers were made from Red oak, with "ostrich effect" I had never heard of that, but it is similar to birds eye for maple. Really cool looking. You can't really see it that well in the picture so I included a picture of the scrap, the left side is the rust stained side.
Okay for those who don't know about the rust stain….
Take everything rusty you can find, put it in a jar with white vinegar, and let the rust dissolve for a couple of days. Strain it, and wipe on any wood that has tannin ( oaks, walnuts..) at first it looks rust orange, then after it dries, it turns black. It is a chemical reaction, and will not fade. If you want it to seep into all of the grain, you can add a drop off dishwasher detergent, this changes the surface tension of the solution.
