Project Information

Santa brought us a new 55" TV this year and so a woodworking opportunity was born. This is my version of the Woodsmith #169 plan using some spalted hickory, walnut, and some birch plywood. Unfortunately, it's been a very cold winter and my desire to be in my garage has been minimal since Christmas break but I finally got around to finishing it this weekend. Just in time to move out of our house… I'll get some better pics once it's moved into the new house and is setup properly. It was finished with boiled linseed oil then 4 coats of glossy wipe on poly for most of it and three more for the top. I would like to put a few more on the top but I simply ran out of time and have to start packing up the shop. I'm a bit of a fan of "imperfect" wood. If I had it to do over I would not have used the birch plywood. I don't feel that the color was a good match. But I had it and didn't want to go shopping… Thanks for looking.

Nice work Ian, that spalted hickory looks great with the walnut and birch. I can feel your pain with the cold winter, I finally got some heat in my work space this year. A cold shop just drains all the ambition out of me :)
Good luck in your new house, this will be a nice addition!

Ian, great job on this. I love the Spalted Hickory! I am in the process of making this right now as well. I did change the plans a bit. I am making a Knotty Alder 24" deep cabinet. I'm putting a natural 2" thick edge top on it, with a floating 1/2 oval black glass shelf on top. I also chose to put dark black glass doors and double raised panels for the sides. I got the idea for the top from a fellow LJ on here that had made a cpl Entertainment Centers with this type of top.

Your craftsmanship looks great, congrats on the new house as well. Sorry to here the weather has been difficult.

Very nice work Ian! I hear you about that cold winter thing, I can remember many days in my shop where I could see my breath and worked on my projects wearing long-johns, a knit cap and gloves (not to worry, no safety hazards in the work that I was doing), but you know what? It was still better time spent by far than sitting in a warm house watching the idiot box!
Take care!
