Project Information

This was fun! After making the Wood Whisperer's classic cutting board for a friend, my brother in law and my mother in law wanted their own cutting boards.

The Space invaders board was simply 130 blocks cut from Teak and Maple, each measuring about 3.2 cm squared at a length of 3.5 cm which were then glued in 10 rows of 13 blocks. Those 10 rows were then glued together to make the board. Lots of glueing, sanding and then grips routed with a 20mm router. Final coating was a wax oil mix store bought which really brought out the dark wood colours and also softened the uneven colour tones of the maple.

The pizza stone oven design was a take on a picture I found online. Cut the teak into strips 5 cm wide and then glue a 3mm wide strip of maple to each strip of teak. Table saw them crossways into strips with every second strip turned 180 to get the offset brick pattern. Finally turn them all 90 degrees for the end grain and glue together. I also routed grips as with the Space Invaders board and coated with the same oil wax mix.

Glueing tip = line some good quality baking paper on strips of scrap wood which are then put either side of the board before applying the clamps. Also lay a big sheet of baking paper under the board before glueing. I was amazed how easy it was to take the board off the clamps and bench after glueing without any damage to the board whereas I had lots of issues when I made the wood whisperer board.

These are both heavy boards which make for great kitchen cutting boards or serving platters and both went down a treat with the recipients :)
