i patterned this wine rack design off a jewelry box i did a few years back (the last pic in this string, but its described in greater detail on another one of my other project posts). the style is japanese modern. took a few tries to get the leg curve, but once i got one that looked good in pine, i made a pattern and used it on the 4 finished legs.
i used walnut for the legs, figured maple for the front spans, spalted maple in the side panels, pine on the wine racks and an elm slab for the top. the log looked rotten, but my friend jim with the lumber mill sawed it up to reveal a real nice grain. i like using spalted maple to bring the dark of the walnut together with the light color of the maple, seems like a real nice accent.
i built a jig to assemble the wine rack uprights to keep the spacing uniform. i looked at construction details on lots of wine racks. i was not fond of the cross grain glueing method all used so i added a couple of brads to each slat on the rack. we'll see how it works.
this wine rack holds 15×7 for a total of 105 bottles. since there is a big range of bottle sizes, i measured lots of bottles to get and acceptable range of bottle sizes that i drink. i ripped down some 2×6's to 3/4×3/4". after i got it all together i got nervous about the weight of each column of bottles, so i added a horizontal brace midway up.
i left the back open for ventilation. most of the wines stored in this piece are not valuable and are "frequently consumed", as the room is not temperature controlled for wine storage and it gets some sunlight.
