Project Information

Here is a maple and red oak jewelry box I finished not to long ago. I'm not a huge fan of red oak because it seems like it's every where but i found this particular board to be very interesting. It reminded me of tiger striping, hence the name.

The lid is maple burl veneer and the trim and trays/dividers are from the same board, even though the grain is interrupted by the maple sides I tried to achieve a continuous flow on the rest of the box. The inside is lined with suede and hinged with side rail hinges. The finish is oil/poly home brew with a cpl coats of paste wax.

Thanks, I was pleased with how it came out. Especially the bottom trim/feet. All my previous boxes had retangular bottom trim this time I decided to add the curves and it acts more like feet and adds a bit of elegance.

Bob - ever since I ran across that board I usually scan the top of the red oak pile for ones like it. I have 3 more I've found since. I'm not really sure what causes it but I'd guess elements/minerals near bye and the tannic acid.
