Project Information

This is elm burl veneer over pine with a pine backing. I scratch beaded the mouldings in poplar because it was what I had on hand but I'm not totally happy with the results - the ink raised the grain a lot more than in other woods I've "ebonized". The profiles are tiny, so it wasn't possible to sand the grain back fully without losing a lot of detail. The butt jointed 4-way join on the back is copied from period examples I found online.

Edit: I should plug the Veritas shooting fence. Doing mitres was something I always hated but the adjustability of this fence made it a lot less frustrating. The installation instructions are faulty and the brass threaded inserts are too brittle for the task but a great tool otherwise.
