Project Information

Drop Leaf table-A Maloof inspired 36" diameter drop leaf table out of Mahogany. There is wooden hand shaped hinge that has wooden supports underneath to hold up the leafs. The pedistal base is all hand shaped to resemble tree roots. This piece could serve as a game table or even a nice sofa table.

Love the wooden hinge! Is the hinge pinned with wood as well or brass bar stock, etc..?

The wooden hinges are a very powerful statement in an otherwise understated
table, I like the 'contrast' very much. Great design!

I will make a point to not show this one to my wife, should she get the idea in her
head that I could make one even half as nice for her. Beautiful.

That is so cool! I have never seen that done before. How close is it to the Maloof original?

I think that the table is beautiful, from design to finish. Of course, like everyone else, I think that the hinged drop leaf are the focal point of the piece. They look a lot like the type of hinge made by Rob Cosman in his boxes. You seem to have accomplished what most of us working toward - perfection in your craft.

Thanks for all the kind words.
Chris-there is a 3/8 steal rod thru the hinges and plugged at the ends. The hardest part on the hinges is makeing sure all the holes are drilled accurate and that you glue it up right were everything lines up.
Blake- the hinge design is definitly straight from Maloof I can't take credit for that. The legs are similiar to some thing he does I just kind of put my own spin on it

Really like your designs. This is a nice table. I tried working with a client to build a drop leaf with wooden hinge joint, but I couldn't get the guy to orient the grain in the right direction. He wanted the hinge along the side grain, which I couldn't convince him was a really weak joint. You did it right. Maybe one of these days I'll get into the mesquite furniture. I should I have a yard full of trees, dropping limbs and giving me flats on my lawn mower.
Keep up the nice work.
