Project Information

This is my first attempt a making a hand saw. I got the plate, back, and fasteners from fellow LJ - ErikF. The handle template is from Blackburn Tools. The back and fasteners are made of copper and the plate is filed for rip at 16 tpi. The plate also has a slight cant, being the tow is slightly narrower than the heel. For the handle, I used a piece of walnut that I got from my Dad that is about 40+ years old. He'd been hoarding that walnut since before I was born. He gave me a piece of it the last time I was home to visit and so I decided that I would use it to make something for him. Last year I made him a hand plane, since he enjoyed that plane so much, I want to again this year give him something from the heart.

Tip to anyone that wants to make their own handle, pick up this Gramercy Handle Maker's Rasp from Tools for Woodworking. It has been invaluable in shaping the handle in a very quick, precise, and controlled manner. I would also suggest picking up the appropriate drill bits if you need to drill the plate. Standard jobber bits will do it, but they will have a very short life and may also not provide a clean cut as they pass through the plate they want to pull slightly deforming the plate. I will be picking up a couple carbide spade bits for my next project.

Making this saw brought me much joy, as well as some valuable experience. I cant wait to make my next and hope that it turns out as well as this one did.

Thanks for looking and have a blessed Christmas!

Rob

Wonderful looking saw. I'm so used to the brass backs, but I really dig that copper. Your old man is a lucky guy.

Thanks Erik. If I had more time, I would have put a little more effort into the plate and back, but it came out pretty good.

One lesson I learned was not to use wet wood to make a display stand for it. I took a off cut of oak and squared it up and cut a slot in it to stand the saw up for display (seen in the pic), but little did I know that it would rust the plate where it was making contact.

Your dad is sure to treasure that beautiful saw, Rob. You may have to convince him to use it and not just sit and gaze at it. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas!

Thanks guys and Merry Christmas!

I do have another 10" DT plate but that one is for another "project". I also have a 12" plate filed crosscut for a carcase saw, and that one will be mine. Probably go with an open tote for that one too.

I'll pick up another plate in the coming weeks and make one for myself if things don't work out as I intend.

Sweet saw, Rob… And so generous considering you don't own one yet. I might have had a tough time coming off it in such a situation.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, no biggie, I will have my own soon enough. It gave me joy knowing that my Dad will cherish it more than anything I could have bought him … well except for maybe a new Pick-em-up truck… :)

Lovely saw. The rust may have just been the tannic acids in the Oak, not that it was green. Gibson guitars had the same problems when they used Oak for their 1st guitars. They deteriorated quickly so they changed woods, to Ash I believe.
