Project Information

Good Morning Lumberjocks !
It's been a while since I posted - spring brings yard work : ) However, I recently finished my first attempt at making a curved top box. The box is made of baltic birch veneered with Walnut burl and maple edging. The top started by making a curved form comprised of a concave top piece and a convex bottom piece made of 1" MDF. These were used to glue two pieces of 3/32" flex ply to make the top, this was then sandwiched between the walnut veneer on top and a piece of cherry veneer on the bottom. I used a mini piano hinge w/ built in stops, and made the cover lift from wenge. The interior is veneered with flame maple and features a maple tray. The lining is "dusky blue" butter suede. The finish is multiple coats of lacquer rubbed out and waxed.
It was a fun project and I plan on doing more; as I really like the dome top.

Really nice work. The arch top is a great touch and certainly sets the box apart. Great choice on the suede, looks very distinctive against the maple. I also like the lift of winge.

Very nicely done Dave.

Another really nice one Dave. I really like the way you used the figured maple on the bottom and inside, providing contrast, but in a subtle, tasteful manner. The blue lining is a great complement to both the maple and walnut. Nice work.

It's coming along, but I must say that the engineering on this one is a bit like herding cats… Once I resolve one conflict in the mechanism - two more appear, and usually with longer claws…

Did you use brushing lacquer on this one - or spray it? Came out really nice.

Finely crafted box. The domed lid is appealing and once you've made the forms you can make over and over.
Like the clean look and the lid lift.

Hi Dave,

I'm glade to see your still at it. This is a very rich & classy looking Jewelry box. I really like the walnut burl veneer with the flamed maple banding inlayed borders on the edges they really pop out to catch your eye. The inside of the box almost looks as good as the outside.

I really like your brass name tag, how does one go about getting some made? I think that is a great finishing touch!!!!

Dave…..that is beautiful. I do like the curved lid and the contrast between the walnut and the maple. It is such a classy box. Where did you get the mini piano hinge?.I have never made a complete veneered box and seeing your piece has inspired me to make that style. I read somewhere that Roger Bean has a video or book so maybe that is where I start.
