Plain sawn white oak. Natural finish using Zar matte OMU
Tools Used
Table saw, planer hand planes, scrapers, mortising press
Location

Another heavy piece. All boards planed to 7/8". Natural plain-sawn white oak with a bit of sapwood at the client's request. I was skeptical, but it adds some visual interest to an otherwise plain finished piece. Instead of sanding, I went old school and smoothed and finished the top with hand planes and scrapers. My first attempt at that with a larger surface and was pleased with the results (after an hour or two of tuning the planes and burnishing scrapers). The client wanted a water-based poly instead of anything oil, so the OMU turned out to be a good compromise. It went on beautifully with a foam brush. Absolutely no streaking, but ya gotta work fast - it dries and skins very quickly.
