Project Information

Some of you may remember about 4 months ago i posted pics and video of a simple jig designed to make wood bowls on a table saw. That jig was an experiment to see how well it would preform and get a better understanding of the stresses, pressures, and dangers. Much to my surprise the blade deflection and ware turned out to be much less then the standard cove making method on a table saw. The amount of deflection was less then half and the ware was also considerably less as best as i could measure it anyway.
As A result of my little experiment I built this following Jig and designed it to be very versatile in use with over 48 indexing points on four different fields. It has the ability cut sets of bowls with perfectly repeatable results. This is still just my proto type. I am planing my next build for an improved version of this jig in just a couple of months.

Video link to see it in action -

As always thanks for watching,

Izzy Swan

How long did it take you to design and build that jig? It has a lot of moving parts. Great job on the bowls.

It took about 14 hours to build. I desinged it as I went along in my head. No plans were drawn up. I knew when I started it what I wanted it do. Its realy a pretty build when it all broken down. Just alot of different things g9ing 9n that make it a bit fancy looking. Lol

Izzy, that fixture is a work of art besides being so very functional!. Stanley tools could not design one like that!!
The designs you can bake with it are endless!.

Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas, Izzy…....................Jim

That is the best fixture I have ever seen. I hope you got a patent on it or Rockler will be selling one soon. I remember the "Ringmaster" bowl maker, but yours is so much better.

Nifty idea and your jigs (all of them I have seen) are great! But why not just build a lathe? You could easily do it with your expertise and DIY skills and it would have to be inherently safer. Just a thought. You basically have a headstock and power already in your jig. I see the jig does help in the spirals and other decorations on the router table though which would be harder on the lathe. Don't get me wrong, I'm not faulting your skill or ingenuity at all, they are very good skills, just wondering.
