Project Information

Built this for my daughter over a weekend.

Coopered lid, made from poplar and pine scraps. Inset hinges/lock. Finished with dye - gel stain - poly.

Daughter and I beat it with sticks, keys, rocks, etc to get a worn look, she loved that part!

Made a hand built, removable till inside that slides on runners. Used walnut and ash for the till….

Pretty basic stuff…...

Third picture is before cleanup and waxing…..

JC,
Thats some nice work… I'm sure your daughter will cherish it . Nice job on fitting the lock and hinges. did you use a template and router or just hand cut them? It looks pretty big too. What are the dimensions?

I wouldn't call it basic stuff. It is beautiful. Though I personally would have a had time 'aging' it - I can understand why just would have had a hard time myself.

Avast! Great looking chest ahead. You certainly did some clean mortise work on your hinges and the full mortise lock. Aarrgggh!

Thanks for the comments….

Tom, I cut the hinge mortises by hand, and cut the lock mortises with a router using an edge guide and some stop blocks….It was nerve racking, as you well know :)

Oh, and its 28in long, 11 or so wide, and about 15 tall…..dimensions were driven by the lid and the material I had on hand….

That edge guide is a tricky thing… Seems you have it figured out. Nice job.

Yea, I built up the sides by clamping some scraps in order to give me a wide base. After that it was pretty easy….
