Project Information

I'm building a box and needed a handle to tote it and remembered a YouTube video by who I can't remember that I made a template from.
Jim Jakosh triggered my memory of this technique when he made a few cool handles for his router and lathe chuck boxes.

This handle/pull is made from mahogany and white oak.

Here are some of the process photos.

Drawing the shape of the opening and arch of the top of the handle.

After cutting out the shape of the inside and top of the handle I draw the shape for the sides on the top that has to be removed.

A lot of filing and sanding is required.

If your going make a few of these it's a good idea to make a template of the size you'll need. This one was for some doors I made for cabinet stands for my large power tools.

It's finished with 5 coats of wipe-on ploy sanded with Mirka 360X, 1500X, and 2500X
sanding pads and Minwax Paste Finishing Wax.

Thanks for visiting.

I wish you had done this project a couple of weeks ago when I needed a cool handle design for a project I was working on. Perfect combination of wood species. Really nice.

Excellent James!

I'd be tempted to "template up" if I was going to try more that a few of those. The sanding looks just too grueling 8^)
Nice way to make something useful from small bits!

Thanks Splinter.
Now that I think of it sanding was a bear. I had to walk away from it and rest my fingers several times.

Mahogany is a nice wood to work with. It's only 1070 LBf on the Janka hardness scale.

Cool build JEMI... hope it's not for a khaki colored cardboard box… fitting it with screws would be a bugger.

How'd you manage those markups without your glasses? Didn't look like you used a super fat pencil.

rc, if you read this… there's a difference between Abranet and Abralon... Hope I don't need to educate you with another of my "short" videos… ugh… pottzy just gnashed his teeth.

Beautiful job, Jim. The contrasting colors work well with the simple and elegant deisgn.

My only suggestion would be to drill a decent size hole at the inside corners, or route that part with a pattern bit to give you a bit of a radius rather than a sharp corner. Nothing wrong with how you did it, just the engineer in me trying to reduce a stress point on the pull.

Little Black Duck you always give me a good laugh. And no it's not for a cardboard box. And yes I am aberrant.

Thanks Jim Y. I see what you mean. I designed it to fit the average med lg hand.
It's very robust and the white oak sandwiched inside should add enough strength.

When I look at the totes of my no. 7 Stanley Planes and see the grain direction I wonder how they stayed intact all these years. But they did. Maybe my handle will make. Time will tell.
