Project Information

I was approached by a friend about making some custom tap handles for his micro-brewery. I was immediately intrigued by the opportunity and set about coming up with something elegant and cost effective for their start-up brewery.

I ended up getting into a bit of a bidding war with another company, and eventually won out, even though I was a tad more expensive, because they liked my design a little more. Most of the intricate cutting is done on my CNC Machine, but that is only about half the battle…there's still the feral screw, and metal washer (for brew magnets) that must be installed, not to mention all of the edging and finish work, a very tedious process that proved to be…

The most difficult aspect of the build was getting the "flip" right on the machine. I had countless hours trying to get the software, machine, and wood lined up properly so that the complicated design would be symmetrical on both sides. For anyone who is still on the fence about using a CNC machine, and whether or not it should be considered "woodworking" (I was for awhile, even when I first bought the machine), let me tell you, there are quite a few parallels to the artisan skill required with properly using the machine. It's certainly not a plug and play - paint by numbers - type of tool. Every time I use it, I draw on my experiences in the shop.

Thanks for looking…

Nice work. CNC is far from plug and play. I have done metal mill and laser work as well as some router work. It can be plane frustrating trying to get it just right.

Excellent job. I still maintain that the CNC is just another tool and I want one really bad.

Hey Bob; well done my friend. They look outstanding. You would think they would have at least gave you a few of their beers to drink but I guess the Bud Light Limes will do. Ha Ha
