Project Information

This handle is done in a more traditional Derby style but I've added some heft to give a more comfortable grip. The handle is made from solid Cocobolo, the collars are Bloodwood and Brazilian ebony and the shaft of solid Bloodwood. It's a nice sturdy cane for a tall gentleman.

I had a problem with the finish drying on the handle, as it seems that Cocobolo has a high oil content and could only absorb some of the tung/poly finish. I had four canes being finished at the same time with a variety of woods including Bloodwood, Macawood, Claro Black Walnut, Ziricote and Cocobolo. The Cocobolo would not dry to a high gloss and I had to reapply to strip off the gummy finish. The shaft and collar dried to a high gloss, but I kept them on a more satin finish so not to over accentuate the duller finish of the handle. It is actually more sensuous than the high gloss and provides a sure grip. The three other canes dried to a high gloss without incident. Another experience with the mysteries of how to finish wood.

When you get ready, you can just send it to me. I'm 6' 2" and I might could use this sooner than I'd like to if the stupid aches and pains don't go away. :>) Just kidding.

It is fantastic. What a nice choice of woods, they compliment each other very well. Great workmanship!

Fantastic. I really like the free form handle. The matt finish looks good too.

Keep it up and thanks for the advice on mine.
