Project Information

This was a crazy fun and hard job. I was contacted by a private collector that said that they knew that I was a furnituremaker but,was wondering I could build the a display case for a few items. I wrote him back that morning and said I would have to look and see what he was looking for. If he would like to let me know more of what he was looking at I would see if I could help him. I then went to work that Saturday morning to do the open studio I was having and my wife came in and said the guy had wrote back and had some movie pieces like the witches hat!! I said WHAT DO YOU NEED SIR!!!
The case is built out of Cherry that has been stained with a hand rubbed oil finish, museum glass all around ,and LED lighting up top with a lock on the door that was built to look like the frame. All of the crown was built by me on the table saw.

What a wonderful oppurtunity, I gather that is the original hat?
A great job too with simple but neat design elements.

The case is subtle and does not compete with what is displayed. Good job.

Nice work! I like the clean design and warm color of the finish.

I have been wanting to build a display cabinet for quite some time now to house the products of my other hobby, building plastic model airplanes, but that is the sort of project that is way out of my comfort zone. Could you help me with a few questions?

What is "museum glass", and is it necessary for a display cabinet? I was thinking of using tempered glass for both the cabinet and the shelves-would that be adequate?

Are the glass "walls" of the cabinet set into rabbets cut into the framing members and then held in place by screwed in, removable strips of wood? I'm thinking that would be desirable in case the glass "walls" ever get broken-does that make sense?

Thanks for any advice!

Thanks everyone. A fun but stressful job that i am glad to be looking at the picture now. I did this job last march(2011) and just got photos from the client last week. I did get to hold the hat but the holder was not made when I delivered the cases so I could not take my own pictures with the hat in it.
