Project Information

Recently I decided to make a custom veneer box with some new to me learning techniques. This box is made out of Baltic Birch plywood for the sub straights and has a book matched marbled Chen Chen veneer exterior with solid wood Ebony edging/corners. It has a book matched Tiger Maple interior with solid brass Brusso Quadrant hinges and a solid brass mortise lock with key. I custom made the escutcheon for the lock out of brass. The finish is 5 coats of semi gloss spray lacquer with a buffed wax top coat.

The first 5 pictures make the box look a little light in color but the last picture really shows the true color of the finished project and the hidden texture of the wood.

A very handsome box. The veneer combination with the ebony stringing is striking. So much to like about this box.

Nice box Richard, I love the Chen Chen veneer. Never seen it before.
Great veneer work and matches. As is often said, simple is anything but simple to achieve and you have nailed it.
Simply elegant.

Very nicely executed! The Gabon Ebony really makes the Baltic Birch stand out. Very elegant and modern. I have seen some really nice Baltic Birch that had a flame pattern forming from the core, but alas, it is too soft of a wood for me to use for my cane handles.

Keep up the fantastic work!

Well the choice and placement of the veneers certainly attacts the eye, then the ebony edging complements the overall build.
Marbled Chen Chen veneer,.... I shall have to put on my shopping list.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. When I decided to start this box I was not sure what veneer I was going to use and what kind of pattern to put on the box. As I reviewed my veneer stash the marbled Chen Chen jumped out at me and I figured I would let the natural grain pattern with a book match design speak for itself instead of trying to over incorporate too many elements into the design.

That may be the most beautiful box that I have seen….very well done.

I really like it when people show how they built boxes like this.
