Project Information
I was trying to stretch my abilities to make a piece that shows a little more creativity. I saw a picture on the internet that I liked and I took that impression to make a pattern. The funny thing was I had my own impression of the origin of the piece until I was almost finished with it. I started to show it to people and they saw something completely different in it. I pictured it as having a southwest flavor, but each person that has seen it has seen something different in its origin. Here are some of the different influences that I have heard so far; it looks American Indian, Egyptian, African, American Eskimo, Asian (ying-yang), celtic, and even references to 9/11 because of the eagles and the sad faces. Each side has small differences to give it some character and each of the 157 pieces are made individually. Most of the wood used was very hard so I spent a lot of extra time sanding down to 400 grit.
I hope this could be my first lesson in making art, each person will see what they want in every piece. One thing I ask is for all of my LJ friends to comment on what their first impressions are of this piece and see if you have an impression of it I have not heard of yet (just curious of what you all get from this).
It was made with NO stains and was created out of blood wood, curly maple, Brazilian cherry, wenge, aspen, walnut, yellow heart, hackaberry, purple heart, American cherry, and ebony.
