Project Information

In the June/July issue of Fine Homebuilding, the cover-story article was titled "Craftsman Casing - Simple elegance with site made trim".

I loved the look of it, and my wife did too, so when we bought our house last year and I did some large-scale renovations, I took off all the existing standard-issue window casing… unfortunately, I haven't really yet gotten around to replacing any of it, so…

The final version of this will be done on 14 windows in maple. Never having actually built anything remotely like this before, I figured a prototype in cheap big-box pine would be a good way to learn on inexpensive wood. The wife is happy with the results, I think the proportions look good (what do you think?), and fortunately all but four of the windows are the same size, so batching these out will be relatively straightforward.

Now all I have to do is get about 100 board feet of 4/4 and 20 board feet of 5/4 maple and I'm on my way.

Nice job. The proportions look perfect. Just wondering why you want to use maple. Are you leaving the wood natural?

If you are going to paint it, I'd just use the cheaper pine, it looks great.

Looks good, the only thing I would suggest is to put a small radius on the corners of the sill-I can just see a child hitting his or her little head on it. I know it will change the look a little, but it is better than a scar on a childs head. The built-in hutch that is in our house had square corners like on your prototypemand after my daughter got hurt (nothing serious thank God) I rounded them over. Just a thought. Also if you are going to paint them to match the chair rail might I suggest poplar, much cheaper. Have fun.

Thanks all… I am planning on keeping the trim natural, hence the more expensive lumber.

Excellent Craftsman look!

I had been thinking about replacing my cheap, no design window trim. This gives me some very nice design ideas. Thanks! And good work, Ryno. And good choice on the natural trim. Mine will be in natural knotty Alder, to match the Southwest/Craftsman style of our home.
