Project Information

This is a custom designed Western Luggage Rack, made from Walnut, with distressed saddle leather for straps.

If you would like to order one, or a whole set of these racks, let me know at my email address:

The carved artwork on the side where the Gold Star is located can be anything that you would like, provided I can carve it.

Project Story:
I designed and built two suitcase/luggage racks for a customer in Arizona that has previously purchased a Western Style Mirror (another project to post some day).

I met the family at the Western Design Conference last year in Cody, WY. The mirror I had on display that they liked, I had sold earlier in the day to a gallery in Reno, NV, so I built them another mirror, carving a Texas Style Star on the top, and some lettering that fit their home. A few months later, they asked for these luggage racks to be designed to match the Mirror. All of the pieces are in the family's resort home in the mountains.

Normally, you see these type of luggage racks in a chromed metal tube with black canvas straps. Pretty ugly, but that apparently is about all any hotel can buy on the market. Hopefully, that will change some day.

This particular set of Luggage Racks have been built in Walnut, have Distressed Leather straps I purchased through my friends in Durango, www.skyhorse.com, who are most likely the best saddle makers living in the world right now. They are extremely busy, but fit this little project in for me. The carving is gold-powder painted. I tried to make these a piece of functional-art and stay within the customer's budget.

Very nice, I like the star adds a nice contrast. Looks like an awful lot of carving all over it though.
Thanks for posting.

gorgeous - and yes so much better than the standard type. You'd really feel special putting your luggage onto this.
Well done

Thanks Lee. I doubt I could see them in a store for the price I need to build them, and have the store double it for a retail price. They are pretty time consuming for what I think most people would pay for them. Any time I have been approached by retailers, they want me to cut my price in half, which I can't do. I tell them to double my price, and they say they can't do that either.

I'd love to be wrong!!!!!

Hey Mark, That's pretty neat. Get a list of the Dude ranches and lodges in Cody and Jackson, Wyoming and you'll probably need to hire a bunch of help. Nice design.

Great work Mark - and by the way (speaking of saddles) - have you seen Thos. Angle's saddlework?!

Also, his idea of marketing to the dude ranches and lodges is a great idea…
