Project Information

I messed around and bought a subscription to Cowboys & Indians magazine about a year ago. So i had to try my hand at Western motiff design in this king size headboard i made for a Christmas gift. I hope our REAL cowboy jocks don't take offense at a city slicker venturing into their territory!

I bought the old pine door at a salvage yard for 20 bucks. Had to strip a century of paint off of it and add a little to its length. I drew the animal designs on tracing paper and cut them out with a razor blade to use as a stencil. The post and top caps i made out of salvaged pine, as well as the little diamond squares.

I really played around alot with the look i wanted for the finish. Ended up giving the whole thing a light hazing of the same off white laquer i used for the animals before i did the clear laquer topcoat. I sanded out most of the striping efect my spray gun left before sealing it up. Was trying to make it look like it wasn't newly built and had somewhat of a built in history to it. I even did some motiffs on the post that i didn't care for in the end so i sanded them back off. Look closely and you'll see i didn't get them all the way off. I kinda liked the look that said the bed had been tampered with and may have looked different in the past. Also seemed to marry the post to the old door in some weird way.

Maybe i got close, i think i'm always learning new ideas that'll work better next time i try. Thats what makes woodworking so dang much fun!

Miles, This is a great piece! I think you did an excellent job of doing the "cowboy" motiff!

You are really cranking out some projects lately!

this is wonderful.
I especially love how you turned the "I didn't get them all the way off" motifs into a design element. It definitely works. Nice

Nice job, Miles! Those old doors sure have some character to them. I just posted a project with old doors from early 1900's and really understand stripping paint on them! I, too, left some of the old paint for added character.

Very nice for a "city slicker," too! I think we all are cowboys at heart. Just wait for Thos to comment…. LOL

Way to go!
God Bless,
Hawg

By golly, Miles, I think you got it!! Those are exactly what all the folks are looking for right now. I think your finish is exceptional. A lot of the folks who are buying these pieces right now are in my age group( baby boomers). We grew up on Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Rex Allen, Etc. These pieces bring back that childhood love of the west and admiration we all felt for our heros. Make some more, they'll sell like hotcakes. Real cowboys can't afford any thing like this.

Great job, Miles. I like this a lot.

Now I'm sure there is a joke in there somewhere about giving a lady friend a bed with horns on it, but since this is a family website, I won't go there. :)

By the way, real cowboys NEVER wear their spurs to bed.

That has to do with creepy-crawley things in the night. Like real small Innians.
