Showcase cover image for Country Gnome Door

Project Information

Aug 2, 2008

Today I got a big surprise!! in between rains, I went out to my gazebo and saw that the gnomes had been busy and made their own entrance to the building!!!

Yes, I have a gnome door at my gazebo. The wall seems to be made from a piece of old barn board.
The door appears to have been carved out of the same piece of wood.
The door frame, door cross pieces, and the window frame look like willow that they have stained to create a nice contrast to the door.

They have lights on inside, as can be seen by the glistening yellow glow in the window but they must have the light situated just right so that you can't look in.
Also, the artistic little devils have used a leaf button they must have found lying around as the door knob.

There are now 2 gnome homes in my yard!! I wonder where they will show up next.

cool.
I've had a similar idea on the back burner for years. I've "been gonna" cut a mouse hole - Classic Cartoon style, in the baseboard, but also set up a model room inside. Table out of a spool and so forth…. something neat to capture my little ones imagination.
that is if I can;
#1. put it in without ber being awares
#2. keep the real mice from moving in and getting squatters rights.

I wonder if it wasn't Bob2 in his natty blue gnome suit that had a (tiny) hand in this. I've seen him wearing it on Facebook, Seems he got it as Gardentenders.com…

thanks :)
I had the idea of being able to look in the window and see some furniture as well, Scott…
maybe next one.

This one just developed out of the pieces of scrap wood I picked out of the trash.

Pretty cute!

Someday you'll have to try catch one of them gnomes, & use him for a model for a carving.

That'd be a good first carving for you. I've planned on carving one someday, it's on my list.

Hey Roz,
Is that Gnome on the TV comercials one of yours? Do you know him? Can you get his autograph?
Years ago I was stationed in the beautiful country of Wales. There was a lady how lived along my route to work that had Gnomes in her front garden which she dressed daily. I could always tell what to expect from the weather that day by glancing over at the Gnomes, yellow rain slickers, scarfs and caps, Sunglasses etc. Terry

thanks everyone :)

Hey Cuz…. can't say for sure. I haven't seen the gnomes yet-their door just showed up yesterday.

That's funny re: dressing it.
I guess if I wanted to do that then the one Dick wants me to carve would have to be a rather big one. :)

Hello Ms. Debbie;

Is that what keeps pokin' holes in my shop, and messin' up the tools?

I wouldn't mind so much if they would clean up after themselves.

Ms Debbie, that is so cool. Now all it needs is a sign that reads: "There is no place like Gnome"

FWR: haha that's a great idea!!

Pretty spiffy. I thought gnomes were taller … or is that trolls. I'm not so good with recognizing foreigners.

Careful you don't step on one in the middle of the night.

Think I'll make one of these and hide it in the garden. Maybe I'll make one for the neighbors and just let them "discover" the new tenants!

I really like ScottB's idea and would a small lamp inside to simulate when the Gnomes are at home (and also to attract attention from the kids).

you should be able to rig up a solar light for inside the window.

that's my plan-hidden around the gardens.
I have one already, by our well. and this makes 2.
