Project Information

I needed to build some cornhole boxes for my annual Spring party this year. C'mon, you know what cornhole is. It's that bean bag tossing game that is really popular right now. Anyway, this is the project that catapulted me into the woodworking hobby.

The boxes are made of 3/4" cabinet grade birch plywood. I added a 1/2" roundover to the edges of the top panel, the holes, and the handles.

Finishing: I made three passes of 100 grit, 220 grit and 400 grit with a coat of Varathane's Dark Walnut after each sanding. These boxes are VERY smooth!

Tools used: Router, Jigsaw, Circular saw, Drill.

Joinery: None - about 30 counter sunk screws per box (plugs used to fill screw holes).

You can find the official rules here

I used that site to get the official dimensions of the boxes.

Basically, you set the boxes up facing each other (20' or 30' away) and toss canvas bags, full of corn, and try to get them in the holes. It's become hugely popular lately. At least it has in the Chicagoland area…

:) Ahhh yes, cornhole.

Cornhole hasn't made it across the US yet. I've got some neighbors that are from Ohio so I know what it is - he's got a set that we pull out in the cul-de-sac and play. I'm in Atlanta and a lot of people look at you really strangely if you say you're playing cornhole with your friends… The name is slowly changing to "Corn Toss" around here.

PaBull, I'm not sure that picture is a true reflection of the game. I only see one beer.

We've been playing a lot of that at family gatherings this summer. I think my BIL keeps it in his truck (painted Ohio State Colors…. I'm partial to your wooden one myself. Been fun, easier to play with a beer to counterbalance the bean bag…
I was thinking the surface should be a little rougher to help keep more on the board, but I guess the slow accumulation of corn dust from the bags helps keep the game good and slick.

Very cool - for a while there I thought I was the only one posting these things on LJs!

Like the finish although I'd be worried the bags would hit and zip off the back being soooo smooth!
