Project Information

I was asked to build a corner hutch that would also have hidden gun storage. Not having any plan to go by, I went to Sketch-up and started to design what I thought would work and slowly it all came together. The client asked that it be Knotty Pine. I finished it with Amber Shellac and 2 coats of clear Shellac. It turned out great and the customer is very happy. It was a difficult but fun project to build.

Here is a short video of how it works:

Here is my Sketch-up design. Once I got this far with the design, I had it figured out and went to the shop and got started

Thanks for the nice comments! I appreciate it! Charles I used self closing full extension drawer slides rated for 150 lbs and they work great! I secured them in the front first. To make the pine panels fit flush to the outside, I shimmed both vertically and horizontally the back side of the drawer slides before I secured them in place. It took a bit of time but in the end they worked out great.

Very nice.
With horizontal shelves, this same design would work great for storing DVD's (do people still buy them??..I wouldn't know, I still have VHS tapes)
Well done.

Great idea, I really like it.
How do you open it once it's installed?
I noticed in the video you grabbed it from the back side, which would be against the wall after installation.
(just man up and grab hold where ever?)

There is a guy here in Alabama who has made these and posted them receiving a great deal of praise and many orders. This looks exactly like his design except his side units hold 8 long guns each side. Have you been to his sight? Nice work.

Pretty cool. Are there any laws about storing firearms where you live?

That is a great cabinet! You really did a nice job. What makes it so special is that it is in no way obvious that either of those two large drawers even exist!

Congratulations!
Charlie
