Project Information

When my wife and I got married two years ago, we lived in a third floor apartment. She had always wanted chickens but the bath tub was the only place to put them at our current residence so, we decided to wait…

We bought a house in late December last year and as soon as she could she ordered 5 tiny chicks and immediately I was given the task of designing their home. I'm an VP at a local sign company - now for an executive I do a lot of hands on work, that's how it is in the small business world, as I'm sure all of you know. So I drew up the plans and let me wife make the necessary changes to benefit the birds.

We went and got the lumber and started. I took about 5 weeks of working on the weekends only to complete it. As soon as my wife chooses a color we will paint it up and trim it, I'll upload pics of that as soon as it's TOTALLY complete.

The framing is basically 4 pressure treated posts with exterior plywood for the exterior walls. The windows are framed with 2×4's (3.5" face against the exterior wall) there is rigid foam insulation on each wall, covered with a plastic vapor barrier. Then the 1/4" sanded plywood interior walls went up. The floor is CDX braced by (2) 2×4 cross beams. All of the assembly was done with deck screws (3.5", 2.5" and 1.625")

The roof has ice and water shield laid on the CDX and then traditionally shingled like a house.

I'd love to know what you guys think!

Looks good so far. Seeing all of the wooded area around your house, I fear, coyotes or weasels etc seeking out a chicken dinner some day. Hopefully this is secure enough.

First off, welcome to Lumberjocks. It looks like you have already fit into this crew nicely :). I really like the design you and your wife decided on. If those birds don't give you extra large eggs and lots of them they need to become Sunday dinner :). It appears that they will have plenty of space to roam. From apartment to country, nice move.

Nice work.
The only thing I would suggest is some sort of mobile set up (wheels) so you can move it around from place to place on all that grass I see in the picture. Chickens will manicure and fertilize the grass as it is moved. If you have a vegetable garden put them in it in the fall and they will clean up bugs, weed seeds, and leave it fertilized.

Looks good. The "ladies" (what the hens at our place are known as) will love it. Chickens are fun. Thanks for sharing.

Great looking coop, and I second LesB's recommendation. Now I will have to make sure the wife does not
see this, or I will be making one. Thank you for sharing and welcome to Lumberjocks.

Thanks Guys! Feel free to borrow the design - If you message me your email I will send you the measured out drawings that I started with.

We do have a "portable coop" more of a pen really - we are going to have them fertilize the raised beds etc.

I added a door to the end of the run, because leaning into the coop and trying to grab the chickens wasn't fun the first few night, when they didn't understand how to go up the ladder. They go up when it gets dark now, so it's much easier. If I can upload more pictures I will add some of the painted coop and the "people door" on the run.
