Project Information

This project came to be about a year after I had finished building this house. THe homeowner, who is an artist by trade, had asked if I would be interested in building a contemporary shelf that would fit on a wall under the staircase. After a couple of different sketches I was off and running.

The shelf has a wild nonlinear geometric pattern with a few of the boxes sticking out farther than the others. The back of the piece is routed out and has a 1/4" plywood back that was painted to match the wall. This was how I designed it to stay together, and look as if it's just sticking out of the wall. In the bottom right, you can see the clever way the thermostat was included in the design.

The shelf is built out of african mahogany, with a shellac/wax finish.

NIce looking shelf. Fits the space well like how the back blends into the wall.

Welcome to LumberJocks, btw.
