Project Information

The title of this piece is drawn from its resemblance to a compass with its four major radials. It is rendered in claro walnut with wenge accents. The top panel is wenge, tiger maple and bubinga veneers arranged such that they give a three-dimensional effect. I made an effort to match the grain of the wood throughout and seems especially striking on the gently tapered octagonal column. I did an eight-piece match on the column by re-sawing a piece of 8/4 claro to get a book matched set, then ripped each piece into four segments.

Careful attention to the grain continues in the book-matched feet that include a wenge inlay for emphasis.
Medallions are placed at the cardinal points around the apron. Notice how the grain matching continues on the claro walnut apron. Wenge is used to frame the bottom of the apron and is shaped into a bead. The curved apron is a bentwood lamination consisting of claro walnut on the outer and inner faces with five layers of poplar in the middle.

I exhibited this table at the 2005 Wood Works Events show in Tampa. It won A First Place ribbon and Best of Show. A few months later, I entered it in the 2006 Florida State Fair Fine Furniture Exhibit and got First Place in the table division.
