Project Information

well ive been at it again with a new chess board, this one is made from some really great wood, the squares are made from ambrosia maple and yellow southern heart pine, there 2 1/4 inches square, the boarder wood is mimosa, and its 2 1/2 wide, and i also have a 1/4 strip of walnut up against the board and the corner feet are walnut, the over all size of the board is 23×22 3/4, i always enjoy making a chess board and will put this one up for sale, but if it doesnt sell, im sure i can find a home for it right here, winter is here and some nice games in the evening would suit me just fine..thanks for taking a look. and for any comments you make, thank you…grizz

That is beautiful and I see no reason why it wouldnt sell. I like the way the corner feet raise it up like it does. Great job on the woods used and the craftsmanship.

very nice table Grizz.

Are the squares as thick as the board itself or is this veneer on top of a substrate?

hey PurpLev...yes the squares are solid, no veneer here, and mike are you asking how i make it, if so its fairly easy, you glue up a total of 8 pieces and alternate them then after they are dried you cut them to the width you want and then put them together but alternating it so the different color wood is opposite the other..i never really thought about there being a blog on making a chess board, but maybe it would be fun to do one..did i answer your question mike..

This turned out great, now all you need is some chess pieces with little bears for pawns and a grizz for the king and a variation of other bears for all of the other pieces. You did good buddy.
