Project Information

This is a 3 inch oak wood feather. I used my pattern and glue spray to put on the wood I made for this feather.

tools are drill press to drill a hole in the center.
Scroll saw to cut out the center.
band saw with 1/8th inch blade to get tight cuts done.
white masking tape to help hold the board together as I make the compound cuts.
real fine sand paper to make it real smooth.

Plan on tying a leather string with a colorful bead to it and hanging this on my rear view mirror in my van.

I got the feather pattern from one of the scroll saw books I bought but added to the pattern to make it
a compound cut to put the twist in the feather as it is.

Thanks for checking out my work.

Nice work! A "leaf" is on my list too-but I hadn't thought of making as much use of power tools.

I suggest you don't hang it in you van though. Unfortunately, I think people would accidentally break it for you and I would have to blame you for leaving it there. Your leaf has an optimal viewing position anyway, so perhaps you can find a nice spot for it with that in mind.

This is really nice. It looks like it would have been very nerve-racking and tedious to get this done with the precision you accomplished. Great job.

Very cool. Must have taken a fair amount of time to cut it out. Sanding would be a pain also.

Thanks Everyone for your wonderful comments, this was a 20 minute project, and the sanding was actually very easy to do. So far I have made one out of pine and another out of oak, can't wait to try other wood with this pattern, any suggestions on what wood or what I can do with this feather?

J. Mullen asked: Any suggestions on what wood or what I can do with this feather?

How about gluing it to the top or bottom of a handmade wooden frame?
