Project Information

Finished the blanket chest I've blogged starting here.

The chest is made with a mortised and tenon cherry frame. The panels are veneered 3/8" Baltic birch plywood. The veneer is curly maple finished with 2 coats of General Finishes Seal a Cell and 6 coats of Armor-Seal. The curl appears to have a ½" of depth and is pretty neat. The three back panels are solid cherry.

The lid is from glued up ¾" solid cherry and has been strengthened with 4 ?runners? They were screwed on with enough room for the panel to expand with humidity changes. The weight of the lid is more than most hinges could handle and I wasn't too keen on the available hinge supports. I ended up using three 60 foot pound rated hinges from Rockler. They are a little stiff, but work fine and hold the lid in position once it is opened past about 45 degrees.

The interior is lined with aromatic cedar and trimmed out with cherry. The cedar wasn't of the highest quality but I had plenty to pick through.

I took the design inspiration from another blanket chest posted by another LJ'r, jsheaney. I took a few liberties with the design incorporating some curves into the bottom rails and legs.

Thanks for looking.

Joe: that's beautiful, and an inspiration.

I know I like a project, when I start mentally running through the house to figure out where it would go, if I made one !

Nice looking project, Joe. You can't beat the maple cherry combination. It will only get more beautiful with age. Thanks for sharing.

Joe, you've done a great job! What a handsome piece. I especially like the hinges you chose, same as I used on a similar chest.
