Workshop Information

Location
Ireland
My workshop is located in the Attic of the house, only place available.
Its a small space 8' x 12'.
My biggest hassle with this is trying to keep the pieces i make small enough to pass down through the opening 34" x 22" or putting the parts together once taken down.
There will also be the issue of keeping the stairs and landing clean of wood shaving and trying to keep the missus some way tolerant .
This is a work in progress.

Woodisgood, I am looking forward to seeing pictures of your shop when you get a chance to post them. Tours of other shops are always welcome. I can well understand your "problem" with the wood shavings. I have often commented that my wife tends to let me know when I am tracking sawdust into the house from the shop. Somehow she just does not understand that sawdust and a wood shop seem to go together. :)

By the way it looks like my brother-in-law lives about an hour's drive from you. His wife is Irish and they live in Portlaoise.

So this is my workshop at the moment….........rough as a bears arse, but i have to start somewhere.
I have a small collection of hand tools, a bosch 1/4" router and table, Makita 12" compound mitre saw, DeWalt 18v Cordless.
My next plan of attack involves insulation and plaster board.
I got my 3 double sockets put in yesterday and 4 foot strip light (which makes a great difference).
I am planning on having a 2ft wide worktop (3/4" MDF) run round 3 sides of the shop at 39" from floor level with the already workbench and router table fitted in to finish flush with the top.
This will involve building a platform to bring the router table and bench to the worktop height.
I'm 6'2" and the 39" worktop height is the most comfortable for me.
What i'd like to look for advise on is whether to bring the worktop round 3 sides or just on the long walls as i plan on getting a table saw in the near future.

Hi Scott

Glad to hear from you, and yes Portlaoise is about an hour as the crow flies but not by our bog standard roads.
Happy too that i'm not the only one repeating the sawdust/woodshop idea.

My shop seems tiny compared to some lads shops on the site, aaah if only!!

It looks like you have done pretty well with the space that you have. Your shop is roughly about the same size as a former co-worker of mine. His was about 100 square feet but he did have a table saw, benchtop planer and jointer in there. It was a little crowded but he managed to turn out nice cabinetry and furniture in his shop.

It looks like you have your shop space organized well and, if I were going to be adding a worktop, I would be tempted just to put it on the long walls in order to give as much working room as possible. But that would also depend on the type of woodworking that you want to do. For instance I tend to cut up sheet goods so I need at least 7' on the outfeed side of my saw. This would be difficult to do in your shop if there was a worktop on the wall behind the saw. With a 39" working height you may be able to wheel your power tools- router table, table saw- underneath the worktop to conserve space.

Thanks for the tour. I enjoyed taking a look at your shop.

Hey Attic man…

Its not the size of the shop but the sincerity that is applied to a task in that shop…your doing fine…nice job.

So yesterday i spent the evening insulating and hanging plasterboard and the whole area is starting to look like a proper shop now, and the light is reflected down much better.I will paint the walls white to enhance the light further once completed.
Scott, i am going to take on board your advice and have the router table and table saw fit under the worktop and keep the centre of the shop free until needed.

Hi Thanks for sharing your attic shop. I don't have allot of space to work in ether. My table saw and planner sits out side on the side of my house covered up with tarp when not in use. My shop is in my front porch of my 2 bedroom house. Take care my friend Jeff M.

You have to do what you have to do. The most important thing is that you have started and if you keep working toward the shop of your dreams you most likely will have it someday.

I've been busying with getting the attic slabbed and painted recently and fitting worktops and trim.I painted the entire area white and what a differance it makes. Starting to look like a workshop finally.

We've had a great week here in Ireland with both the Queen and President Obama giving the country a morale boost.

I've added a few new tools to my workshop recently.

The Bosch Table saw is great and i have made a sled which is so handy i cant understand why i didn't make one sooner….......oh yeah because i never owed a table saw before. Photo of the sled to follow.

I went with the Paslode Gas gun because of the tight area in the attic, the last thing i wanted was hose pipes, leads and a compressor taking up too much space and causing a hazard of tripping over.
At least with this gun i just take it out of the box, nail what needs to be nailed and put it away without fuss.

Impressive organization skills you got there. In that small space everything has a place and everything in its place must be the rule! Well done!

Today i finished my table saw sled and put alder veenered chipboard as doors to my cabinets.
Also attached 15mm white melamine to the original top i had and this has added strength and enhanced the lighting, plus its good for scribbling down measurements on and is easy to wipe off later.
