Project Information

Just finished up a couple of boxes. The first is a memorial box made of Walnut and Maple (the mill said Ambrosia Maple, but all I know it is came from a syrup tree.) Fairly basic design, but the client wanted the lid to be proud of the box so that was a first for me. Don't know if that will be a standard moving forward, but I like it on this piece. One subtle last-minute addition, I added a slight cove to the bottoms of each side to give it a little lift and suggest feet.

Finished size is 5×8 inches and for those inquisitive minds, that is a 3/4 inch, 7° taper on the top edges.

Nice work, as it always is. In my experience ambrosia maple has a lot of color in it like a spalted maple due to beetle infestation. This looks pretty clear. At any rate it is a beautiful box.

Ken, That's my understanding as well on the maple. Either way, it was a beautiful piece of wood to engrave.

Regarding the raised panel setting proud of the frame, I read in a magazine article that had an interview with an Early American furniture reproduction maker that this design feature of American Period and colonial furniture. Nice touch.

Really pretty box. I like the raised portion. What is a "memorial box"?

Well, it's kind of like an urn, but not for ashes. You can put items from the person's life, pictures, etc. It's really a cool idea, as it makes a nice way to share a life story with a future generation.
