Project Information

This is my entry for the 2021 Beer Swap. If you haven't joined a LJ Swap you owe it yourself to "just do it" I pulled HokieKen as a swap partner and he is a tough bird to make for and select beer. The center piece (after the beer) is a carrier. I'm sure he has two of three of these so I left out the dividers so he can use it for tools, flowers, whatever. The handle is turned from a Bartlet Pear branch, ends are locally felled Cottonwood. Fortunately I just got a new "Wood Slicer" Blade and put new tires on the bandsaw. So the cutting and planing the Cottonwood went easily. The leather is locally sourced from a friend and both glued and nailed with copper nails. The bottom is just plywood. Knowing Virginia is not just for Lovers but peanut lovers too, I had a chunk of Osage Orange and turned a heavy weight peanut bowl. And boy is it heavy, it won't be skidding around on the table. Btw if you have not had Virginia Peanuts check them out here. And last is a stubby bottle opener. Not like he really needs it but the Bloodwood was really sweet.

This was my favorite project this year for sure ;-p The beers were fantastic and much enjoyed. The bowl is a really thoughtful idea and design and superbly turned. Smooth as a baby's butt and twice as heavy! And no, I didn't NEED the bottle opener. But I've never been accused of being a minimalist so I'm happy to add it to my collection. The tote is really unique with the copper nailed leather sides. It's gonna get used for something, I just haven't decided what yet. But something will come up needing a home and I'll have a Eureka moment.

Thanks for a great swap and a great package!

That bowl sure does look smooth as silk. Nice finish on it. The tote is original as well with the leather.

Great work Bill! I had no idea that Osage Orange had such nice grain… Of course the biggest one I have up here is only 4" in diameter…

So much wood - So little time! (I can see a new shirt design coming!)

Nice job Bill. I know when I do "wood"working I tend to get tunnel vision, and just see wood. The use of Leather is pretty slick here. That bowl is a nice one. Pretty sure everyone could use it.

Cool, Bill! As I said in the swap thread, I'm always trying to turn things lighter, but there's definitely a place for a heavy, spill-resistant bowl around beer. And the opener and tote are pretty dang cool, too!

The bowl is really something. I'm also a fan of your bottle openers and leather totes.
