Project Information

This is my first ever carving. My wife is having knee surgery soon so I figured I'd make her a comfort bird to help her recovery. She loves it.

For those that may not be familiar, these are meant to be held and stroked with your fingers, thus there is no detailing needed. The act of stroking and the feel of the object is meant to distract the user from any type of pain. Prescription strength narcotics, it is not, but any help is appreciated.

I carved it out of walnut and finished it with BLO and paste wax. I found a pattern online and cut the rough shape out of a block on the bandsaw before starting with the final shaping with a rotary tool with a small sanding drum. I then hand sanded up to 400 grit (23 micron) paper before finishing.

It's not quite symmetrical and there are still sanding drum marks where the back of the head meets the back. I will definitely try more in the future.

Well done, Tony! If you haven't already, get it back for a few minutes and sign your name and year on the bottom.

Well done, Tony! I've carved a handful of such birds, and I always think they're a fun little project when I manage to find the time.

Thanks everyone! I had a good time carving this. I will probably do more as I work through scrap and cutoffs.

Tony that is really nice.

I have been carving and thinking about an article in FWW (I think) of an article where someone made birds very much like yours. He gave them to friends (if I remember) when he went to dinner etc.

Where did you find the pattern?

Thank you. I had included the link to the pattern in the original post, but here it is again, if you need it.
