Project Information

The wife wanted a coffee table so this is what I tossed together. The top is walnut bordered by birds eye maple. The dutch-men are tiger maple, with the base being sycamore. I had posted this online to get a few opinions about the table and what I was seeing fellow LJ's pointed out as well. The top was to thin. So all I had left in the shop was some wormy walnut, that's is what I used. I think it came out better. I made the base with mortice and tenon construction. The top was 3 pieces of maple glued together. The base was then pined with dowels t the top. I rubbed it down with teak oil then BLO. Three coats of shellac were then applied. I will let it sit for a week and may apply a final coat of lacquer.

Superdave! I wonder if Picasso, Monet or Michaelangelo ever just said, "...so this is what I tossed together." This is awesome! See…now there you go again making me want to learn some more. Maple + Walnut = Sweet Contrast.

-BTW I almost cried envisioning you "wacking" away at that piece of Walnut! We have a term for that here.."All squirels, all squirels!"

Did you float the table top for expansion and contraction?

Paul I haven't seen you in a while. It is good to here from you. And you made me laugh out loud. Thanks.
Doc I did the walnut is pinned through a tongue and grove and only glued in the center. It should be able to move back and forth.
If not I'll just wack it back into place.
Thanks gentlemen

Thanks Roger, you guys helped a lot. I hope everything goes well the next few days.
Thank you to Mike. She never asks me for anything. This time she did. She said make it strong. That would be one reason the base is a bit beefy.
I know I have done well when I get complements from Roger and Mike.
All is well now. Thanks Guys;)

Hey Dave - great looking table - you have really been on a roll lately - beefy it is and should be around for the great-great grand-kids to enjoy…..

Love the bowties Dave. Nice looking table. If I had one question, it would be about expansion. By adding the frame around the end grain on the top, will that effect it in any way? I cant watch the video from my phone, and the laptop is out for "repair", so if that was addressed, I apologize.

Great job, looks very stout.

That is a wonderful table Dave. It looks like it could easily support a ton or so of coffee! Not that I am suggesting you test this out.

Great job - congratulations.

Hey Jeff thanks, the 30 pound grand youngun has already tested it out. I pointed to the dutchman and told him " if you want paw paw to teach you that I will." He promptly walked over to a bench with a dutchman and pointed at it and said "paw paw." Man its on. He is almost 2. Being winter I have been in the shop a lot. Come summer the yard and garden will take a bunch of my time. But I like vegies;)

Shane, the video does show some. The walnut top is tongued and the maple is grooved. I pinned it from the bottom and glued the center. Time will tell. If it fails, oh well lesson learned.

Chuck thanks for the smile. Thank you for the complement. I might have to try. It will have to be espresso.
Thanks Guys, A lot

What a beautiful table. I love the design and walnut and sycamore worked really well together. The b'eye maple frame makes it even more special. This should earn you a lifetime 'get out of trouble free' card from your spouse! How long did it take you to 'toss this together'?

gfadvm tanks for the complements. And I read your post to my wife and her reply was "hmmmmmmmm."
Ok may bee 'get out of trouble free' for a month or two. As far as the time about 25 hours. I am slow and I try to do a lot by hand. Most of the stuff is for my family and I would like to see it hang around a bit.
I did write the wife a note and placed it inside the joinery. I wouldn't tell her what was on it and its driving her nuts.

25 hours is slow for you? It takes me that long to make a crummy little box! I'm even more impressed now.
