Thanks Tom.
Thanks Dan, Kwila is a bit like teak, fairly dense, nice to work with.

Tony; Some great looking coasters. Nice build and I'm sure that he is very happy. (With the coasters, not the 60th)

Very nice.

Let me share a tip you may consider in the future. Drill a shallow hole in the bottom of each coaster and glue a rare earth magnet in the hole. I use magnets that are 18 mm in diameter and 3 mm think. It makes it real easy to stack the coasters even without a special stand.

Those came out great. I tried to get that same design a few months ago but with different sized hole saws on my drill press, but there was just too much tearout. It also leaves a hole in the middle, but my plan was to fill it with a plug.

Thanks for you comment Karson, Lee & Mike.
Rich, I did put 10mmX2mm rare earth magnets in the bottoms but they are just a bit weak. Will know next time. I put one in upside down just for a laugh. That works better than the ones that attract. LOL

I've made coasters using the drill press and 5" hole saw, just remove the pilot bit and clamp your piece. Go slow and that eliminated the tear out around the edges.

Thanks for your interest Jocks.
Good idea on the drill press Mark.
Craig, I had that piece given to me but it is not expensive down under. It comes from the Phillipines. This is what wikipedia says about it "The tree has a variety of common names including ipil, merbau and kwila. In the Philippines, it also known in some areas as taal. The tree's timber, called merbau or kwila, is a very durable and termite-resistant wood, making it a highly valued material for flooring and other uses. The wood can also be used to extract a dye. Merbau can contain a "gold" fleck that runs through the grain, considered to be attractive by some. Due to extensive logging of the tree, it is endangered in many places in Southeast Asia, and almost extinct in some.[4] Extensive amounts were purchased for the venue of the 2008 Summer Olympics in China, which is the largest importer of the wood.[5] The wood is used for flooring in U.S. and European markets where it is commonly sold under different names. Both licensed and unlicensed mills harvest the wood."
